The Detroit Tigers played at Tiger Stadium from 1912 until 1999. Demoliton began in 2007 of everything except what was between the two dugouts. The Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy tried to raise funds to save the last remaining section of the park but their attempt failed due to (in my opinion) some corrupt city officials. I don't think the city ever had any intention on saving part of the park, they just wanted it to look like they were giving the conservancy a chance. On June 8, 2009, the remainder of the demolition took place. As of the time I took these photos in August 2009, the city has just left the park as a big pile of rubble. It's almost like they wanted to just quick smash it in, in a few places so that there was no hope of people fighting to save it. So now Tiger Stadium sits in a big pile of rubble with bathroom stalls exposed on what remains of the upper level...apparently, this is the memory the city of Detroit wants to leave the fans with about their beloved ballpark. What a shame! Check out this great article by Jeff Miller of the Orange County Register about the disappointment in the way the city of Detroit is handling the demolition.
